Art Rules and Grading

Art Class with Mrs. Young

When you first enter the classroom sit down and draw the daily drawing written on the board in your sketchbook.

When the bell rings be silent because I will take attendance and then give the daily instructions. All questions will wait until I am done talking and taking attendance.

If you need something for art you may get up (if I am not talking to the class), however if you are getting up to roam the room or socialize you will be docked points and told to sit down.

Do not sharpen your pencil when I am talking to the class.

My desk is off limits

Do not get into my cupboards or storage rooms without my permission

Be respectful to everyone and materials

Bags will be placed under the tables

Do not move tables or chairs.

Never, ever touch another student’s art materials or art projects (even if you are just curious…. you can damage their work).

When the 10 minute bell rings be in your seat and be quiet. I will give cleanup directions and go over any important information for the next day. Some lessons we will clean up 3 min before class ends. DO NOT line up at the door.

I will dismiss you, not the bell. If you are talking or there is art materials not cleaned up the class will stay after.

Cell phones will not be used unless given a specific task by the teacher. If I see you doing anything else with your phone I have to take it to the office per the school rules.  Taking another person’s cell phone is not funny; it is stealing and will have consequences.

Turning in work. You will keep your artwork in the class cabinet until I ask you to turn it in directly to me. If you have a large piece of art I will grade it immediately so you can take it home or store it in a safe place. DO NOT put it on my desk unless I tell you directly.  Students may sign their name on the front of their artwork, but you must also put your name and hour on the back.

On most Fridays have your sketchbooks out on your table so I can come around and grade them.

Late Work- Of course I love it when students turn work in on time, however I understand that some students take longer than others to create art.  I give extra time in class to those students who need it, but if a student still is not done when we need to move on I will take the artwork for full credit up to 2 weeks late (unless it is right before the end of semester or the end of the school year).  Every two weeks after that the grade will be lowered a whole letter grade.  For example: If a student turns in their artwork 3 weeks late the highest grade they could get would be a B, however if they would have gotten an 85% if turned in on time they would now get a 75% etc.

Grades will be given for different categories:

ART PROJECTS - 25, 50 or 100 pts each

DAILY PARTICIPATION - 5 pts per day

JOURNALS/SKETCH BOOKS – 2 pts for each daily drawing

Art projects- these are the final drawings or other art projects you turn in to me. Each will be worth 25, 50 or 100 points. There are five things I am looking at when I grade: Objectives/directions, Composition, Craftsmanship, Creativity, and Respect/Cleanliness. You can get anywhere from 0 to 20 points in each of these categories.

This is what I’m looking for to get all points in each category

Objectives/Directions- Project exceeds all lesson objectives. Student has met the criteria, followed directions, and gone above requirements

Composition- Project exhibits a great deal of planning using compositional rules, principles, and elements. Overall piece looks complete.

Craftsmanship- Project demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship and technique. No apparent imperfections such as smudges, drips, wrinkles, or tares.

Creativity- Student used creative problem solving to develop a truly original piece.

Respect and Cleanliness- Student took care of materials, always cleaned up, and was helpful and kind to others.

Daily Participation- Each day you can earn 5 points; so on a normal 5 day week you can earn 25 pts. Points will be taken away if you choose not to work on art and for not following the rules.

Journals/sketchbooks will be graded on Fridays unless otherwise posted. I will be looking for the sketches you made before you started a final piece and the info/comments on the daily artwork I display in class. Each will be worth 2 points.

Individual art projects- These are mainly for advanced students, however there are times I allow the other art classes personal choice for an art project. The project needs to be at the fine art level and worthy of the grade. Most of the time these are worth 100 pts

Extra Credit- You can turn in extra credit by creating art outside of class and/or bring tissues or trash bags in.

Computers:

The computers in the room are for generating art ideas and getting inspiration only. There will be no games played, email, etc. Do not change any settings and do not download anything. If I find you are using the computer for a purpose other than art you will no longer be allowed to use the computer.

Music:

Studies have shown that music can help an artist create better artwork. I have a radio that I will play for the class. I try to find soothing music. I used to allow students to wear earbuds but the majority of them would abuse this so the school no longer allows it.

Cussing- It doesn’t belong in school and depending on what was said affects the consequences.  Repeated cussing will result in discussions with the teacher, parent call or email, and principal.

Passes- I prefer students staying in class but if someone needs to go to the bathroom or get a drink they will have 5 passes per semester (1 a month). Unless it is an emergency the student needs to wait until after I am done talking to the class.  I only allow one person at a time to go to the bathroom and your phone must be put on my desk if you leave my room.
