Physical Development


Course Goal:

The major goal of the Physical Development program is to provide students and competitive athletes the means by which they may train consistently, sensibly, systematically over designated periods of time, in a safe, clean, and professional environment in order to help prevent injury and improve their performance.  


Objectives:

1. To administer strength, stretching, ploymetrics and other anaerobic   
      training programs that reduce the likelihood of injuries and   
      improve performance.

2. To administer a resistance-training program that maximizes physical performance by using various strength-training methods.

3. To instruct students to execute resistance training exercises safely
               and correctly to obtain a desired result.

4. To instruct students on how to implement a fitness plan to develop and maintain a physically active/healthy lifestyle.  

Grading:
A. Each day is worth 5pts. – Grades at the end of the quarter are based on %.
B. Class grades will be determined by participation.
C. Points will be lost for not participating- amount determined by the teacher.
D. If students are injured or cannot participate because of medical reasons they must have a doctors note. (Parents notes are not allowed)

Testing:
A. Student’s max will be set at the beginning of the year.
B. 10 LB up days will occur systematically throughout the year.
C. Max’s will be set on Bench, Incline, Squat, and Hang Clean.

Attendance:
A. Absent from class will result in the loss of 5 pts.
B. All excused absences can be made up. 30 min. in the weight room will constitute a make-up.  (Refer to teacher for availability for make up).
C. An unexcused absence will result in the loss of 5 daily points. No makeup available.
D. No-suit is considered an unexcused absence and cannot be made up.

Tardies:
A. Students will lose 2 daily points when tardy and are without a pass. (if more than 5 min late -4 if more than 10 min late -5)
B. Tardies cannot be made up.
C. School policy will also be followed.

Teacher Availability for make-up:
A. All make-up must be made up in the weight room under Coach Ast’s supervision.
B. Times for make-up will be made available.

Student Behavior
A. Strength and conditioning is a class where you must work in class to obtain a
grade.
B. Students must suit up every day in proper weightlifting clothing. Failure to do
      so will result in the loss of  5 daily points and will not be permitted to     
      participate in the days activities. No suits cannot be made up.
Proper Clothing
 T-Shirt
 Shorts or wind pants with no zippers or buttons on the pockets
 Only tennis shoes will be allowed  
C.  All students will act properly in the weight room to prevent injury and
       damage to the equipment.
D.  Failure to act appropriately will result in the student losing some or all of
his/her daily points and could lead to removal from class.
D. No food or gum will be allowed in the weight room.

Discipline Management Plan

- Be on time
- Follow directions given
- Any verbal or physical behavior which distracts others is unacceptable
- You must spot your partner at all times
- Students may be removed from the program for fighting, being disrespectful, or exhibiting dangerous or disruptive behavior

Assumption of Risk

I hereby release USD 396 and all their employees from all claims on account of any injuries, which may be sustained by my son/daughter while participating in Physical Development during the 2007-08 year at Douglass High School. I am aware that there is
risk of injury involved in the participation in strength training activities. Signing this statement is intended to make me aware of my responsibilities in preventing potential injuries, reporting injuries, and complying with the treatment plan of my health care providers. I understand that injury could range from minor to severe. I understand this includes the risk of brain and spinal cord injury that may result in paralysis, other permanent damage, or possibly death.
